Lumphuni Lotus Flower

It was overcast in Bangkok the day we met,
light rain was falling on Ploenchit Road.

Your Chinese skin was the only bright thing
next to the white coffee cup.

Your eyes seemed brown as they studied mine
but really, you were gazing at the Powerpoint slide.

Your lips squint like your eyes, your accent Thai,
Your fingers keep sweeping through your black hair.

Your eyes were sharper than my glasses,
tapping my shoulder for each visual lapse.

You have my respect, beautiful lotus flower
afloat in the waters of Lumphuni.

I smile recalling the laughter in your eyes

as rain drops drip on the jumbo jet's window pane.
